The Selection Tool (black arrow) selects entire objects, groups, and paths. It is the most fundamental tool in Illustrator for moving, scaling, rotating, and transforming artwork.
Where to Find It
Press V or click the black arrow icon at the top of the Illustrator toolbar.
How to Use
- Select: Click on any object to select it. Selected objects show a bounding box.
- Move: Drag selected objects to reposition them.
- Scale: Drag corner handles of the bounding box to resize.
- Rotate: Hover outside a corner handle until the rotate cursor appears, then drag.
- Multiple: Hold Shift and click to select multiple objects.
Pro Tips
- Double-click a group to enter Isolation Mode — edits only affect that group.
- Hold Alt (Option) and drag to duplicate selected objects.
- Press Ctrl+D to repeat the last transformation.
