Key Settings
Replace Edit lets you replace a clip in your timeline with another source clip while maintaining the original clip's duration, position, and effects. This is invaluable when you need to swap footage without rebuilding your edit.
Where to Find It
Select a clip in the timeline, then Alt+drag (Option+drag) a new source clip from the Project panel or Source Monitor onto the existing clip.
How to Use
- Replace with source: Open a clip in the Source Monitor, set in/out points, then hold Alt (Option) and drag it onto the timeline clip.
- Replace from Project: Hold Alt (Option) and drag a clip from the Project panel onto the timeline clip.
- Replace with clip: Right-click a timeline clip and choose Replace With Clip > From Source Monitor.
- Preserve effects: Effects applied to the original clip remain on the new clip.
Pro Tips
- Use Replace Edit when a client requests a different take — no need to rebuild the timeline.
- Replace Edit preserves all applied effects, transitions, and speed changes.
