Key Settings
The Composition Panel is your main viewport into the After Effects world. Every visual change you make — from layer positioning to effects adjustments — is previewed here. Mastering the Composition Panel's zoom, resolution, and preview controls is essential for efficient workflow and accurate final output.
Where to Find
The Composition Panel is located at the center of the After Effects workspace. If it's closed, go to Window > Composition Panel or press Ctrl+0 (Mac: Cmd+0).
How to Use
- Playback: Press Spacebar to play/pause the current composition
- Navigation: Use the timeline cursor to scrub through frames
- Resolution: Change the resolution dropdown at the bottom to Full, Half, or Third for performance
- Zoom: Use the zoom dropdown or Ctrl+/- to zoom in/out
- Safe Zones: Enable title/action-safe overlays from the panel menu
Pro Tips
- Press the backtick key (`) to maximize the Composition Panel to full screen
- Set resolution to Half or Third while animating for better performance, then switch to Full for final playback
- Hold Alt/Option while dragging the current time indicator to see a real-time preview
