How to Create a Mockup for Your Designs

Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1:Open a mockup PSD file

Download a PSD mockup template from sites like MockupWorld, Pixeden, or GraphicBurger. Open the PSD file in Photoshop. Well-made mockups include a Smart Object layer clearly labeled (e.g., 'Place Your Design Here' or 'Double Click'). Smart Objects preserve the perspective, lighting, and shadows of the 3D object automatically.

Step 2:Double-click the Smart Object layer

In the Layers panel, find the Smart Object layer (identified by a small page icon in the thumbnail). Double-click its thumbnail. A new tab opens showing a plain layer — this is the template where your design goes. The exact size and position of the white area shows how your design will map onto the 3D object.

Step 3:Place and position your design

Drag your design (logo, artwork, photo) into the Smart Object tab. Use Ctrl+T (Cmd+T) to resize and position it within the designated area. Make sure your design fills the area completely but doesn't extend beyond the edges that will be visible. Once positioned, press Enter to confirm the transform.

Step 4:Save and close the Smart Object

Go to File > Save (Ctrl+S) to save the Smart Object. Close the Smart Object tab. Your design now appears mapped onto the 3D object in the main document — with proper perspective, shadows, and lighting already applied. The transformation is completely non-destructive; you can double-click the Smart Object at any time to swap or adjust the design.

Step 5:Add finishing touches

Create a Curves or Levels adjustment layer above the mockup and clip it to the layer below (Ctrl+Alt+G). Make subtle adjustments to brightness and contrast so your design looks naturally part of the object. If the mockup includes a background, add a Drop Shadow layer style to the mockup group for extra realism. Your client-ready mockup is complete.
