Key Settings
The Zoom Tool controls your view magnification in Photoshop, allowing you to zoom in for detailed pixel-level work or zoom out to see the full composition. It is one of the most fundamental navigation tools, used constantly throughout any Photoshop session.
Understanding how to zoom efficiently is key to a smooth workflow. The Zoom Tool offers several modes: click to zoom in, Alt-click to zoom out, and click-drag to zoom into a specific region.
Where to Find It
The Zoom Tool is located in the toolbar, represented by a magnifying glass icon. Press Z to activate it. It is typically placed near the Hand Tool at the bottom of the toolbar.
How to Use
- Zoom in: Click anywhere on the image to zoom in by one increment. Each click zooms to the next preset magnification level.
- Zoom out: Hold Alt (Option) and click to zoom out by one increment.
- Zoom to region: Click and drag a rectangle around the area you want to zoom into — the view zooms to fill that area.
- Scrubby Zoom: Click and drag left (zoom out) or right (zoom in) for continuous smooth zooming.
- Fit to screen: Double-click the Zoom Tool icon to fit the entire image within the window.
