Key Settings
The Vertical Type Tool creates text that flows vertically from top to bottom, starting from the right side of the canvas. Standard for traditional Asian scripts like Japanese and Chinese, it is also used in Western design for headlines and vertical layouts.
Like the Horizontal Type Tool, it creates editable Type layers with full typographic control.
Where to Find It
Nested under the Horizontal Type Tool (T) in the toolbar. Press Shift+T to cycle through variants.
How to Use
- Select the Vertical Type Tool: Press Shift+T until active.
- Create point text: Click on the canvas and start typing.
- Create paragraph text: Click and drag to draw a text box.
- Adjust formatting: Use the Character panel for fonts, size, tracking.
- Commit: Press Ctrl+Enter (Cmd+Enter) to confirm.
Pro Tips
- Use vertical orientation options in the Character panel for mixed scripts.
- Apply layer styles like Drop Shadow for creative effects.
