Best Used For
- ▸Navigate and view documents more efficiently
- ▸Add text, shapes, and annotations to designs
- ▸Set up document layout and measurement guides
Key Settings
The Rotate View Tool allows you to rotate the canvas view temporarily without permanently rotating the actual image pixels. This is invaluable when working on angled elements, drawing curves at a different angle, or retouching at a more comfortable orientation.
Unlike Image Rotation (which permanently changes the image), the Rotate View Tool only changes your viewing angle. When you switch tools or close the document, the view returns to its original orientation.
Where to Find It
The Rotate View Tool is grouped with the Hand Tool in the toolbar. Click and hold the Hand Tool icon, then select Rotate View Tool from the flyout. Press Shift+H to cycle between them.
How to Use
- Rotate the view: With the Rotate View Tool active, click and drag in a circular motion to rotate the canvas.
- Set exact angle: Enter a specific angle value in the Options bar for precise rotation.
- Reset to 0: Click the Reset View button in the Options bar or press Esc to return to the default orientation.
- Multiple windows: Rotate each document window independently — useful when viewing the same image from different angles.
- Use with graphics tablet: Rotate the canvas to find the most comfortable drawing angle for your hand.
Pro Tips
- Use the Rotate View Tool extensively when drawing or painting with a tablet — rotating the canvas to match your natural stroke angle reduces wrist strain.
- Press the R key (custom shortcut) for quick access, or use the scroll wheel with Shift in the tool active.
- Try rotating the view 180° to spot flaws in your image — flipping the perspective reveals symmetry issues you might miss normally.
