Key Settings
The Path Selection Tool (the black arrow) selects and manipulates entire vector paths or shape layers. Unlike the Direct Selection Tool, which selects individual anchor points, the Path Selection Tool moves, scales, and transforms complete path objects.
This tool is essential for working with vector shapes, custom shapes, and pen tool paths. It allows you to reposition entire paths and combine multiple paths.
Where to Find It
The Path Selection Tool is located in the toolbar, represented by a black arrow cursor. Press A to activate it. Press Shift+A to toggle with the Direct Selection Tool.
How to Use
- Select a path: Click on any vector path or shape layer to select the entire path.
- Move a path: Click and drag the selected path to reposition it on the canvas.
- Select multiple paths: Hold Shift and click to select multiple paths.
- Align paths: Use the alignment buttons in the Options bar.
- Path operations: Combine paths using Add, Subtract, Intersect, or Exclude.
Pro Tips
- Use Ctrl+T (Cmd+T) while a path is selected to enter Free Transform mode.
- Hold Alt (Option) and drag a path to duplicate it.
- The Path Selection Tool automatically selects the entire shape layer for quick repositioning.
