Object Selection Tool
Adobe PhotoshopLeft toolbar — 1st group (Marquee, Lasso, Magic Wand)
Best Used For
- ▸Isolate objects for compositing and masking
- ▸Create precise cutouts for product photography
- ▸Define areas for targeted color correction
Key Settings
The Object Selection Tool uses Adobe Sensei AI technology to automatically detect and select objects in your image. You simply draw a rough bounding box or lasso around the object, and Photoshop intelligently identifies and selects it for you.
This tool is a game-changer for complex selections that would traditionally require precise manual tracing. It works best when the object is clearly distinguishable from its background, but it can handle surprisingly complex subjects.
Where to Find It
The Object Selection Tool is located in the toolbar, grouped with the Quick Selection and Magic Wand tools. Click and hold the Quick Selection icon, then select Object Selection Tool from the flyout. Press Shift+W to cycle through the group.
How to Use
- Choose selection mode: In the Options bar, select Rectangle or Lasso mode. Rectangle is faster for simple shapes; Lasso gives more control for irregular objects.
- Draw the bounding region: Drag a rectangle or lasso around the object you want to select. Photoshop analyzes the area and creates the selection.
- Add or subtract: Hold Shift and draw another region to add more objects. Hold Alt (Option) to remove areas.
- Refine the selection: Click Select & Mask to fine-tune the edges, especially for hair, fur, or translucent areas.
- Apply adjustments: Once selected, add a layer mask or apply adjustments only to the selected area.
Pro Tips
- Draw the bounding box as close to the object as possible — a tight box gives the AI less area to analyze and results in more accurate selections.
- For multiple objects in the same image, hold Shift and draw individual boxes around each object to select them all at once.
- If the tool selects too much or too little, try switching between Rectangle and Lasso mode — one may work better for the specific object shape.
