Key Settings
The Direct Selection Tool (the white arrow) selects and manipulates individual anchor points and direction handles on vector paths. While the Path Selection Tool moves entire paths, the Direct Selection Tool gives you granular control over the shape's geometry.
This tool is essential for fine-tuning vector shapes created with the Pen Tool, editing custom shapes, and making precise adjustments to path curves.
Where to Find It
The Direct Selection Tool is nested under the Path Selection Tool in the toolbar. Click and hold the black arrow, then select Direct Selection Tool (white arrow). Press Shift+A to cycle.
How to Use
- Select anchor points: Click directly on an anchor point to select it.
- Move anchor points: Drag a selected anchor point to reshape the path.
- Adjust bezier handles: Drag direction handles to adjust curve shape.
- Select multiple points: Hold Shift or drag a marquee around them.
- Edit path segments: Drag directly on a path segment to reshape it.
Pro Tips
- Hold Alt (Option) and click on a bezier handle to break it for sharp corners.
- Use with the Pen Tool active to quickly switch between drawing and editing.
- Select multiple anchor points and use arrow keys to nudge them into position.
